Immigrants hold the key to success in the Boston Public Schools

On Tuesday, May 29th, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Boston School Committee Chair Rev. Dr. Gregory G. Groover, Sr., Superintendent Carol R. Johnson, Headmasters and proud family members honored 34 valedictorians of the Class of 2012 from the Boston Public Schools at a luncheon hosted by the Boston Harbor Hotel.

Marking it’s 14th year that Boston has held a celebration for the top graduate of every Boston public high school. A Like many immigrants, fifteen of these students overcame poverty, language barriers, and other challenges to finish high school at the head of their class.A Nationalities represented among the students born outside of the US were, Albania, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Morocco, Nigeria, and Malaysia.

Kisaira Cabrera, the valedictorian from Boston International High School, served as the student speaker and shared the story of her inspirational journey from Dominican Republic to Boston. Just three years ago she arrived in the city not speaking any English and is now graduating at the top of her class. This fall she plans on attending Regis College. Congratulations to Kisaira and the other 33 valedictorians who taught us that if you really want to accomplish something, you can!
