Etran Finatawa
Wednesday, October 8, 7:30pm

Juxtaposing the non-instrumental polyphonic singing of the Wodaabe people and the non-vocal instrumentals of the Tuareg people (both from Niger) with percussive guitar, handclaps, and some contemporary instrumentation, Etran Finatawa’s music evokes nomad life in the deserts of Africa as well as a more universal expression of the blues. A musical experience full of life in a desert environment that is seemingly lifeless.» – Inside World Music

Simon Shaheen
Friday, October 10, 7:30pm

A virtuoso on both the violin and the oud, a Middle Eastern lute-like instrument, Simon Shaheen infuses his music with elements from traditional Arabic music as well as from jazz and classical styles in the West. A well-studied musician, Shaheen completed his graduate programs in NYC and continued on to promote Arabic music in the West with the group he created, the Near Eastern Music Ensemble. Presented as part of the Boston Palestine Film Festival.

Kayhan Kalhor Ensemble
Friday, October 17, 7:30pm

World-renowned Iranian musician Kayhan Kalhor is a master of the Persian spiked violin, called a kamancheh. Rooted in Persian classical music, Kalhor’s work also feels the particular influence of Kurdish folk music traditions in Iran. Kalhor has played with many famous musicians from around the world, including the Kronos Quartert and two groups he co-founded: Ghazal, with Indian sitar player Shujaat Husain Khan, and the Silk Road Ensemble, with Yo-Yo Ma. Made possible with the support of the ILEX Foundation. This tour is coordinated by World Music Institute, Inc. www.worldmusicinstitute.org.»
