Saturday night, May 17, will mark the return of the San Jose Earthquakes to Gillette Stadium … the Revolution and the Earthquakes have not met since 2005, San Jose’s last season before going on a two-year hiatus from play … the Earthquakes’ situation can be compared to that of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, which went on a three-year hiatus from 1996-1998 … the Browns’ personnel and players were moved to Baltimore to become the expansion Ravens, but the Browns’ name, colors, history, records, awards and archives remained in Cleveland … in 1999, the Cleveland Browns resumed as an expansion team, picking up the clubs’ history, just as the Earthquakes have done to start the 2008 season … San Jose began as one of MLS’ original 10 teams in 1996 as the San Jose Clash before changing its name to the Earthquakes prior to the 2000 season.
