Making Connections: Contemporary Cuban Printmakers

With the air now cooled to typical levels of autumnal sweater weather – not that we totally mind an excuse to break out our coziest cardigans, of course – we do occasionally find ourselves daydreaming of an escape to steamier climes. Alas, while we’ve already used up our vacation time (except those days we’re smartly saving for snowfall), at least we can still get a taste of hot Havana nights at «Making Connections: Contemporary Cuban Printmakers,» a new exhibition that opened in early October at Laconia Gallery (433 Harrison Avenue, Boston). The show, presented by The Boston Printmakers, features 93 Cuban artists (what, because 100 would just be ostentatious?) working in mediums ranging from lithograph to woodcuts, digital prints to etchings. Showing Cuban art in the U.S. isn’t easy due to travel restrictions and embargoes, so the opportunity to see this show, which brings together prints from a wide assortment of collections that are already stateside, gives us a tingly little thrill, like we’re sucking on an illicit cigar. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., but you can make an evening of it on November 6 for the First Friday reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
