February 20, 2009 – In a move that takes its commitment to the Hispanic community to the next level, El Planeta, Boston’s leading Latino publication, launched its Movie section, CineBOSTON, in its February 20th edition.

With movie listings, film reviews, entertainment news, and weekly DVD releases, all in Spanish, CineBOSTON is the only editorial product of its kind in Massachusetts.

«We are very excited to bring this much-needed information to the hands of our readers, making El Planeta a more dynamic and well-rounded publication,» says Marcela García, editor of El Planeta, which is published by the Phoenix Media/Communications Group. «The addition of José Barriga to our pages means that we now have a leading expert of Latino movies and entertainment offering his unique voice and movie reviews in Spanish for Hispanics in Massachusetts.»

José Barriga is a prominent and recognized figure within the Boston Latino arts world. Most notably, José is the founder and director of the Boston Latino International Film Festival (BLIFF), now in its 8th year. The 9-day event screens an average of 80 films per year, and its goal is to portray an accurate image of Latin America and the Latino community in the US with the objective of developing cultural and community relations through film.

«There is a tremendous audience for sophisticated film commentary within the Latino community,» explains Jose. «Whether the subjects are popular blockbusters or more specialized screenings, there is too little criticism available in our native language.»

In addition to his work with BLIFF, José Barriga is a social psychologist by training that specializes in Latino media and marketing in the US. Originally from Peru, José has attended the Universidad Católica de Lima, the Universidad Ricardo Palma, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Armando Robles Godoy Filmmaking School. He worked as a network TV producer for Telemundo and Fox Latin America in Los Angeles and Miami. José has also been involved in marketing, advertising, and the non-profit industry for Publicistas Asociados, Viceversa Communications, La Opinion Newspaper, Enigma Entertainment and the Kennedy Center in Los Angeles and Boston.
