Boston EMS would like to remind residents as they set their clocks ahead this weekend for daylight savings time, they should make sure their family is prepared for an emergency by replacing the batteries in both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, preparing or restocking their family «Go Bag,» updating their communication plan, and making sure children know how and when to call 911.
«As families reset their clocks, they should also take the time to talk with children about emergency situations, prepare or restock the family Go Bag and update emergency contacts,» Boston EMS Chief Rich Serino said. «Check your stocks, as you set your clocks.»
A family Go Bag, or Go Kit, should be a bag or box set aside in a safe place with any essentials your family would need if you had to stay in the house for up to 72 hours. It should include a 3-day supply of bottled water (1 gallon per person, per day) and non-perishable food, any prescription medications, a flashlight, extra batteries, a battery or hand crank AM/ FM radio, a first aid kit, diapers and baby food if needed, extra water and food for pets, activities for the kids and any other essentials.
Make sure you have a family communication plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to plan in advance: how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations. You will be better prepared to safely reunite your family and loved ones during an emergency if you think ahead and communicate with others in advance. Talk to your neighbors about how you can work together in the event of an emergency.
