Madeleine Steczynski is the Executive Director of ZUMIX, a not for profit organization founded in 1991 in response to the worst year of violence in the City of Boston’s history. The plan was simple: get youth off the street and involve them in music. Currently the organization helps more than 900 young people a year in East Boston. In 2011 ZUMIX was recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama, who invited Steczynski and a program participant to the White House and presented ZUMIX with the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, the most important prize in the country in the area of arts for youth.
