Rent premiered in 1996 and went on become one of the longest-running shows in Broadway’s history. It won many awards, including a Tony for Best Musical and a Pulitzer Prize. The music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, who died suddenly the night before the scheduled Broadway premiere, are based on Puccini’s La Boheme. Rent tells the story of marginalized, impoverished young artists struggling to survive on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the early 1980s as the AIDS epidemic was beginning.
