Boston –The Boston Conservatory Theater Ensemble presents Jonathan Larson’s Tony Award-winning audience favorite Rent, March 3–7 at Midway Studios, 15 Channel Center St., in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood. (Many Boston Conservatory performances are taking place at Midway Studios while The Boston Conservatory’s theater building at 31 Hemenway Street is being expanded and renovated.) Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $22 general admission, $12 for senior citizens and $7 for all students with valid ID. Rent premiered in 1996 and went on become one of the longest-running shows in Broadway’s history. It won many awards, including a Tony for Best Musical and a Pulitzer Prize. The music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, who died suddenly the night before the scheduled Broadway premiere, are based on Puccini’s La Boheme. Rent tells the story of marginalized, impoverished young artists struggling to survive on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the early 1980s as the AIDS epidemic was beginning.
Boston Conservatory faculty member and Eliot Norton award-winner Paul Daigneault directs this production, with musical direction by José Delgado and choreography by Michelle Chassé. In addition to being on the faculty of The Boston Conservatory, Paul Daigneault is Producing Artistic Director for Boston’s acclaimed Speakeasy Stage Company, for which he has produced more than 50 premieres.
