Jamaica Plain’s Jackson Square neighborhood buzzed with excitement on Saturday September 18 as Children’s Hospital Boston’s Martha Eliot Health Center hosted its annual community health fair. Hundreds of attendees from various cultures and ethnicities attended the festival and enjoyed hours of healthy fun. Popular TV personality Angel Salcedo, host of Encuentro Latino, served as the health fair’s master of ceremony. Festival-goers received free health screenings, donated blood to Children’s Hospital’s Blood Mobile, enjoyed face-painting, enjoyed health food, and participated in a wide-range of sports activities. Boston Hoop Troop, a group of «hula-hoopers» from throughout New England wowed the crowed with their graceful art of hoop dance. «Bucket drummer» Peter Rabbit, entertained the crowd with his amazing performance. Paul O’Conner, from Children’s Hospital Boston’s Catering and Laura Sprauer, Registered Dietician, with Martha Eliot’s I’m In Charge Program, led an on-stage cooking demonstration.
Kohl’s Department Stores presented Children’s Hospital Boston with a $458,923 gift for its Fitness in the City programs aimed at increasing kids’ nutrition and physical activity at Children’s Martha Eliot Health Center and affiliated community health centers in Roxbury, Jamaica Plain and nearby neighborhoods. Kohl’s has donated more than $3.5 million to Children’s Hospital as part of its «Kohl’s Cares for Kids» community initiative. Pebbles, the popular co-host of the Ramiro and Pebbles Morning Show on Jam’n 94.5 and the Jam’n Street Team were on-hand to raffle prizes and show her support for community health.
