The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is seeking comments from the public on its draft federal fiscal years (FFYs) 2010-2013 Transportation Improvement Program and its draft amendment to the Regional Transportation Plan (JOURNEY TO 2030). One of several avenues offered by the MPO through which comments may be contributed is a series of public workshops to be held during the week of September 14: one each in Boston, Norfolk, and Woburn.
These important transportation-planning documents guide the investment of federal transportation funds in the MPO’s 101-municipality area in eastern Massachusetts.
The Regional Transportation Plan defines a vision for the transportation system, establishes goals and policies, and allocates projected revenue to regionally significant programs and projects in the Boston metropolitan area. The draft amendment includes the revised set of State Implementation Plan (SIP) projects and maintains fiscal constraint. The SIP projects are the Green Line Extension to Medford Hillside and Union Square, design of the Red Line-Blue Line Connector, improvements to the Fairmount Line, and the addition of 1,000 parking spaces at MBTA stations in the Boston region.
The draft FFYs 2010-2013 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) establishes the list of highway, bridge, and transit projects expected to receive federal funding during the four-year period beginning October 1, 2009.
The public workshops are an opportunity for residents of the Boston region to learn more about, and comment on, these key documents. The three workshops, each of which will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, are:
*Monday, September 14 – Norfolk Public Library. 139 Main Street, Norfolk.
*Tuesday, September 15 – Woburn City Hall, Mayor’s Conference Room. 10 Common Street, Woburn.
*Wednesday, September 16 – Boston Public Library Central Branch, Orientation Room of the McKim Building. 700 Boylston Street, Boston.
The MPO is scheduled to vote on the Regional Transportation Plan amendment and the FFYs 2010-2013 TIP on Thursday, October 1. The meeting will begin at 10:00 AM and be held at the State Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza, Boston. Members of the public are invited to attend and comment at the meeting.
Comments will also be accepted in writing during the 30-day public comment period for the documents, which will begin on Monday, August 24, and close at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, September 22. Comments must be received by the MPO at one of the addresses listed below before the end of this period.
The draft documents may be obtained on the MPO’s website, www.bostonmpo.org, or by contacting the MPO by mail at Boston Region MPO, Suite 2150, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116; telephone at 617-973-7100; fax at 617-973-8855; TTY at 617-973-7089; or e-mail at publicinformation@bostonmpo.org.
