This Thursday @ Johnny D’s: Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers

You dance. You get up and dance. Or you shake in your seat. But you dance. And you feel good. That what happens when Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers let loose.

Born and raised in Harlem, Pucho fashioned his first set of bongos out of coffee cans. He became a fiery timbalero, working steadily at Harlem and Bronx dance halls. Pucho seasoned his Afro-Cuban rhythm base of piano, bass, congas, bongos, timbales and vibraphone with the fresh flavors of jazz horn soloists.

They «Latinized» popular bebop, ballads, blues and R&B gems by infusing mambo, cha cha and descarga rhythms. Their fresh style quickly caught the attention of hip dancers. That was 50 years ago. Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers have been making music ever since. Scenes have come and gone. But the beat lives on. Today, the name, and music, of Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers is as reverent as it gets.

From the Acid Jazz fanatics of the 90’s who «rediscovered» this long-standing group and what the NYC Latin world well know, to the Wax Poetic fans who glorify timbalero Pucho’s timeless soul, and revel in in the knowledge that real Cubano Jazz is alive and well, and coming your way. A once in a blue moon appearance.
