Tanning Beds Moved to Top Cancer Risk Category

International medical experts published research today that classifies tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation as deadly risks.  The research, published in the medical journal Lancet Oncology by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, moves tanning beds into the top cancer risk category, to the same level as arsenic and mustard gas.

Most tanning beds give off mostly ultraviolet radiation, which causes skin and eye cancer.  Placement in the top risk category means that tanning beds are definitely causes of cancer, along with tobacco and the hepatitis B virus.  The research reports that the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75% when people begin using tanning beds regularly before age 30.  In Britain, melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) is now the leading cancer diagnosed in women in their 20s.  Hopefully this research will remind people of the real risk involved in the use of tanning beds.
