Sociedad Latina mobilizes community in support of Boston students

It is time to make our voices heard in the debate on education reform, which could transform our schools and provide youth and families in Massachusetts with equal opportunities to succeed.

In Boston, school officials are moving forward with implementing the recently unveiled «Acceleration Agenda,» a 5-year strategic plan that sets out to close achievement gaps, increase graduation rates, and improve «Turnaround Schools,» identified as underperforming.

And in the coming days and weeks, state legislators will make key decisions on the future of education in Massachusetts, as the House of Representatives votes on the Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 2009. The Senate has already passed the Act, which will qualify Massachusetts to compete for federal Race to the Top funds. This could mean $100 million for Massachusetts schools.

Education touches every one of our lives in some way. As an advocate for Latino youth in Boston, Sociedad Latina is engaging youth, families and community partners in the education reform process. Sociedad Latina will hold BPS officials accountable for improving Turnaround Schools and providing Boston students with the services they need.

Action steps to support Boston students include:

1. Attend the Boston School Committee meeting that will address plans for identified «Turnaround Schools.»

Note! Sociedad Latina will provide transportation to the School Committee headquarters on Court Street. The bus will leave Sociedad Latina offices at 1530 Tremont St. at 4 p.m. on Dec. 16.
