Boston, MA — Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) invites the greater Boston community to its first free Open House at the Citi Performing Arts Centersm Shubert Theatre, Saturday, November 7, 2009 from 11am-5pm. This day will be full of activities to entertain and engage children as well as teens and adults. Visitors can explore the Shubert Theatre by taking backstage and dressing room tours and stepping onstage to see the singers’ perspective of the theatre from the new set of Carmen–all opportunities that are rarely available to the public. Guests can participate in wig, make-up, and pre-performance warm up demonstrations, and raid BLO’s costume trunk for a photo session. Artists and staff will be available to answer questions about opera and what it is like to perform in the historic Shubert Theatre.
There will also be live performances featuring excerpts from BLO’s new production of Bizet’s Carmen, which will have opened the night before, as well as other well-known opera arias. Mid-afternoon, finalists from BLO’s Aria Contest for teens will be judged by a panel of opera educators and arts & entertainment critic Joyce Kulhawik. Cash prizes will be awarded.
Julie House, BLO’s Education and Community Programs Manager, notes, «We’re very excited to open the doors of the Shubert for a day designed to be fun for everyone, no matter how familiar they are with opera. Even if you have never been to an opera, going behind the scenes at the beautiful Shubert Theatre is a magical experience!»
Tickets are not needed for the Open House–people can walk in at any time after 11am. Additional information including the Open House schedule is available at blo.org/open_house.html
