King Sunny Ade and his African Beats are playing at the MFA Concerts in the Courtyard tonight at 7:30. They play a style of Nigerian pop music called Jùjú. King Sunny Ade is an international star that gained a significant audience in the United States and Europe in the 70s and 80s. The Calderwood Courtyard opens at 6pm, but there is limited seating so lawn chairs and blankets are recommended. Tickets are $38 for adults, and $32 for students.
If Jùjú isn’t your thing, a free screening of Paper Heart is being held at the Somerville Theatre tonight at 7:30 as well. The documentary about love stars a skeptical Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera, and Jake Johnson. Charlyne Yi and Jake Johnson will be there for a brief Q&A session after the screening.
Tomorrow, Boston’s only Mexican-Irish bar, Jose McIntyre’s, holds is 17th annual block party to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. From 5 to 11 pm, listen to Joshua Tree, Boston’s best U2 cover band at 160 Milk Street. Cover charge is $10.
Friday night Michael Franti and Spearhead play at 7:30 pm in Lowell for the Lowell Summer Muic Series. Roots of Creation, a New Hampshire band that blends roots, dancehall, and dub reggae opens for Franti. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 day of.
