EEE Detected in MA Mosquito Sample

State officials reported today that EEE, eastern equine encephalitis has been detected in a mosquito sample for the first time this year.  The sample was collected July 16th in southeast Massachusetts.  There have been no human cases of eastern equine encephalitis so far this year, and there was only one human case in 2008.  From 2004 to 2006 however, there were 13 human cases with 6 deaths.  EEE is spread to humans through a bite of an infected mosquito.  Health officials are bracing for more mosquito-born illnesses after the unusually heave rain we have experienced so far this summer.  Symptoms of EEE range from a mild flue-like illness to a coma and death.  Stay safe and wear bug repellant!
