Justin Barrett, a Boston Police officer allegedly sent an anonymous mass emails using a racial slur in reference to Henry Louis Gates Jr. after the July 16th incident between Gates and Crowley, and the ensuing media frenzy. It was reported that Barrett called Gates a «jungle monkey» in an email to fellow members of the National Guard and the Boston Globe. The Commissioner fired the officer when he admitted that he had sent the email. Barrett, a 36 year old veteran who had no prior disciplinary history, was immediately stripped of his gun and badge.
