Salem, MA – (Release Date August 12, 2009) – Hunted to the edge of extinction by a vastly superior foe, Humans return as the most cunning, efficient, and lethal predators the universe has yet seen. Kept secret because of its illegal research, a distant military outpost is spared from the scouring attacks that ended human life on Earth and her colonies. Turning the genetic experiments upon themselves, they stoke the baser instincts of human nature to build specialized soldiers, capable of taking what they need from the enemy and leaving none alive to report the tale, losing all history and most of their humanity in the process.
Angry Ghosts follows a trio of intensely specialized soldiers (dubbed Gun, Geek, and Brick), documenting the grisly realities of their service. Their lives are desperate–knowing no comforts or retirement–and each successful mission only leads to another. But when the enemy lays a devastating trap of their own, the soldiers decide it is too risky to continue collecting from the aliens, and the team delves into deep space in search of anything that can sustain them.
In the abyss, they find a battered Methuselah plodding through the wastes: a Colony ship loaded with life supporting machines and thousands of humans in stasis. What seems at first an ideal match of life supporting apparatus and the military to defend it is strained by a bloody introduction, and the groups clash harshly. Frightened of the soldiers’ fearsome abilities, the Colonists are convinced it is only a matter of time before the soldiers try to dominate them. Frustrated by the Colonists’ «irrelevant values» of liberty, self-determination, and private property, the Soldiers bristle against the inefficient and obstinate newcomers. Without a breathing planet, however, the Colony machinery is useless, and therein the groups find the common endeavor that will cement them together. Someone must journey to Earth and discover if the enemy is still there.
Angry Ghosts might fit on the bookshelf between the rigid societies of Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World, beside the intense, all-out conflict of Saberhagen’s Berserker series, and within the desperate struggle of the hated «Grey Wolves» in Schaeffer’s U-BOAT 977. At 65,000 words, the book ends with a natural cliffhanger, which should maximize the anticipation of its fully developed sequels.
