A new kind of romantic comedy: 500 Days of Summer

If you are one of those people who has never seen a Harry Potter film, who has walked by the lines of dressed-up fans with a tinge of second-hand embarrassment, or who really just wants to spend this Friday night doing something other than watching Daniel Radcliff battle Lord Voldemort, this might be the movie for you to see.  500 Days of Summer, directed by first time filmmaker Marc Webb, is a story about unrequited love.  With a tagline like, «Boy meets girl.  Boy falls in love.  Girl doesn’t.» it is clear that this film is not going to be your typical love story.  Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, the movie represents a new style of romantic comedy, and a bit of a role reversal.  Deschanel plays a girl who doesn’t believe in love, and Gordon-Levitt plays the boy who tries to win her over anyway.  500 Days of Summer, which achieved great success at the Sundance Film Festival this past winter, is a chick flick told from a guy’s point of view, and truly a movie that all can enjoy.  It has been called everything from the «next Garden State» to the new template for future romantic comedies, and is set to open in Boston this Friday, the 17th.
