LA GALERÍA at Villa Victoria Center for the Arts is pleased to present Metrópolis y Orillas, an exhibition of paintings by Ecuadorian-born and Providence-based artist Agustin Patiño. The exhibition will begin with an Opening Reception for the artist Thursday, March 11 from 6 – 9pm. Refreshments will be served.

Completely original in its visual splendor, Agustin Patiño’s work is marked by impeccably crafted oil paintings which reveal fantastic–almost surreal–scenes of extreme chaos and beauty. For Metrópolis y Orillas (or Metropolis and Edges in English), his first solo exhibition for La Galería at Villa Victoria center for the Arts, Patiño presents highly imaginative and meticulously painted apocalyptic jungle scenes, littered with towers of cars and exotic plant and wild life. His works are filled with infinite curiosity and endless mystery, casting uniquely disturbing subject matter with a sea of brilliant colors and implied textures. A witty take on the «urban jungle», the cities in Patiño’s work are constructed of pure imagination, and are at once both serene and riotous.

Born in Giron Azuay, Ecuador, Patiño studied Architecture at Cuenca State University, and continued his studies at the Central University of Quito, where he earned his BFA in Painting and Printmaking. His work is in several private and corporate collections internationally, and he recently won first prize in Arts Worcester’s VIVA EL ARTE competition at the Worcester Art Museum in 2007. His work has been exhibited across the globe, including exhibitions at The Centro Cultural Metropolitano Museum, Quito, Ecuador, The RISD Museum of Art, Providence, RI, The Cultural Museum of Guayaquil, Ecuador, The Contemporary Museum of Art, Santiago, Chile, The Friedrick Naumann Foundation, Bonn, Germany, and The Museum of Modern Art, Cuenca, Ecuador. His work can be found in several private and corporate collections, including the University of Rhode Island, The Museum of Modern Art, Cuenca, Ecuador, Museo Luis A. Martinez, Ambato, Ecuador, and Bank of Holland, Netherlands.
